Dr. Ivan Oestvik

Naval Architect & Zero-Emission Shipping Pioneer
Ivan Oestvik is a technology-driven maritime entrepreneur advancing the industrialisation of liquid hydrogen (LH₂) as a scalable marine fuel. With an MSc in Naval Architecture and a PhD in risk-based design from the University of Strathclyde, his work bridges engineering rigor, regulatory innovation, and commercialisation of next-generation energy systems.
Oestvik led the end-to-end realisation of the world’s first liquid-hydrogen-powered ferry, MF Hydra, for Norled, establishing new technical, safety, and certification frameworks for cryogenic hydrogen propulsion in commercial service. The project moved LH₂ from concept to class-approved, operational reality, demonstrating viable integration of cryogenic storage, fuel systems, and marine power architecture under real-world conditions.
As Founder and CEO of LH2 Shipping AS, Oestvik is now focused on scaling the model: developing standardised LH₂-fuelled vessels while contributing to the build-out of fuel supply chains, including production interfaces and port bunkering systems. The ambition is industrial deployment, linking ship design, energy infrastructure, and regulatory pathways into bankable, scaled zero-emission solutions for Northern Europe and beyond.
Ivan Oestvik brings more than three decades of experience in industrial energy transitions and risk-based ship design. He played a central role in the early development of LNG-fuelled ferries, including fuel production, bunkering infrastructure, and vessel integration — contributing to the commercialization of LNG as a maritime fuel in Northern Europe. His work contributed to establishing the regulatory, technical, and supply-chain frameworks that enabled LNG to move from pilot projects to industry standard. Today, his experience provides direct parallels to the scale-up of liquid hydrogen (LH₂) in maritime transport. In addition, Oestvik has been involved in offshore wind development, contributing to early phase large-scale renewable energy projects and strengthening the link between clean power generation and zero-emission maritime value chains.

Kim Nguyen
Project Manager
Marine Engineer Integrating Technical Execution and Economics to Industrialise Maritime Decarbonisation
Nguyen is a next-generation maritime leader operating at the intersection of engineering execution, infrastructure development, and the emerging hydrogen economy. She was a core contributor to the full A–Z realization of the world’s first liquid hydrogen–powered ferry, MF Hydra, delivered in partnership with Norled.
From 2020 to 2023, she led the development, construction, regulatory approval, and commissioning of the vessel’s liquid hydrogen bunkering facility — transforming pioneering hydrogen technology into safe, compliant, and operational infrastructure. Being part of this groundbreaking project from concept to live operation placed her at the forefront of maritime decarbonisation and provided rare, first-hand experience in translating policy ambition into industrial reality.
Today, Nguyen contributes to the development of multiple LH₂-fuelled vessel types for operation across Northern Europe and US, while simultaneously advancing the support of port infrastructure and supply chains required for scale. Her work goes beyond individual vessels — it focuses on building the ecosystem necessary for liquid hydrogen shipping to move from demonstration to deployment.
With a background of MCs in Marine Engineering from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and a BCs in Economics from the Norwegian School of Economics, she combines deep technical competence with commercial and strategic understanding.
Through hands-on project delivery and forward-looking infrastructure development, Nguyen is actively shaping the foundations of the hydrogen-powered maritime industry — accelerating the green transition and contributing to the establishment of a competitive, zero-emission shipping sector in Northern Europe and the US.

Kjartan Tveiten
Project Manager
Experienced Chief with unique bunkering systems and fuel supply competence
Education in ship technical operations at Fagskolen Rogaland (Karmsund/Haugesund, Norway).
Chief Engineer with class 1 certificate and 12 years of experience as chief engineer and ship engineer in several vessel segments. He holds extensive experience from building supervision and as a site manager, technical inspector, audit manager and project manager in the maritime sector.
His Chief Engineering experience is related to different fuel types and propulsion systems, with LNG, LH2 and battery-electric operation as primary competence.
Tveiten has experience from construction, commissioning and operation of MF Hydra, as bunkering manager for LH2 bunkering for MF Hydra, continuously from start-up (2023-). Is still engaged in the bunkering team of MF Hydra.
Works with the Samskip Sea Shuttle container ship project and its bunkering system, as well as being responsible for training the Viking Libra crew (Viking Cruices), Wilhelmsen Ship Management crew, and develops the operational procedures for the hydrogen systems on board Viking Libra.
